The current Blackfeet Reservation is home to about 10,405 residents (Census 2010). There is approximately 18,000 enrolled tribal members, more than half of the enrolled members reside on the reservation and the other members live throughout the United States, Canada, and possibly other parts of the world. There was a time that members couldn't leave the reservation but that time has long passed and the reservation does not serve as a prison anymore. Blackfeet people can come and go as they wish, they do not need permission as they once had to have in the past. Although policies of the reservation has changed, the policies that limited my people has left a lasting effect on them and it can be sensed in the present time.
Life for people on the reservation is as diverse as any other place! There's so much history of our Blackfeet ancestors in this location as well as the state of Montana and beyond. I'm personally on my own journey of learning my history and what kind of life my ancestors lived as well learning about the reservation of today.
My Personal Opinion
The Blackfeet People are 18K strong and 10K+ live on the reservation, where are the rest of us? Who are they? What do they do? Where are they from? Do they come back and visit?
I often wonder if, Blackfeet that don't live on the reservation, ever think about returning home and bringing their diverse experience back? Or do some just live out there lives where they are because they grew a family and now that's home and the Blackfeet reservation is just a place their ancestors lived once?
Are there Blackfeet people out there raising the bar and conquering? Out of 8K people out there, there has to be many making history in their own community. To every Blackfeet out there and not on the reservation; Cheers to you and I hope your making a difference in your world.
