The Dog was once the "beast of burden" before the introduction of the horse. For the Blackfeet, those days were know as The Dog Days.
The dogs of the tribe were used to haul everything when the bands would move their encampment to follow the buffalo's natural migration routes, as well as hunting companions, and to watch over the camp. Once a revered animal.
Nowadays, the dog is still a big part of the Blackfeet people but not as revered as it once was. In the future, I would like to see a dog park where owners can take their fur babies and a class that trains these "rez dogs" and have an activity available for anyone to participate in. I hope to see our Blackfeet Youth find dog training as another outlet to have available to them. I believe that Rez dog will always be but a change needs to be made for them.
A group of reservation dogs hanging out together. Most likely chasing cars along the main road (Hwy 89) and enjoying their dog life. They probably belong to the people who live in the houses behind them.
