The current way of government is a 9 member council. Each member represents a large area of the reservation. To run for their district, the running candidate must live in the district they are representing for a minimum of 6 months, reside on the Blackfeet Reservation a minimum of one year, and be an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Tribe.
"The council oversees the management of tribal lands and resources, business enterprises, and programs and services of the tribe. The council consists of nine members from four districts who are elected by tribal members to serve four-year terms. Terms are staggered, and elections begin June of every even numbered year." This lengthy document was produced by the Blackfeet Documents Department sometime during the 1970s, according to Anna P. (a longtime employee of the Blackfeet Tribe as director of Documents). While serving as director, her team kept this list going and produced a binder that served as a quick reference. This binder was presented to the council at the beginning of their term.
